An industrywide dilemma

Commercial software developers, corporate software developers, users of the software created by both kinds of developers, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Taligent's investors are all becoming aware of some disturbing trends in the computer industry. This section summarizes these trends from the point of view of each group.

NOTE As used in this book, the term commercial software developers means developers who write and sell commercial software. Synonyms include "shrink-wrapped software developers" and "independent software vendors" (ISVs). The term corporate software developers includes both developers who write software for in-house functions (such as inventory control) and developers who write software that is part of or closely tied to the goods and services sold by a corporation (such as the switching software used by telephone companies). In addition to corporations, a variety of other organizations include software developers with similar characteristics and concerns.
