Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will Sudoku Star run on my mobile phone?
A: Sudoku Star is written using Java and should run on any mobile phone that supports the current J2ME MIDP 2.0 standard.  Most phones have a way to tell you this information, for example on Motorola phones go to Settings: Java Settings: Java System.  The best way to find out for sure if Sudoku Star will run on your phone is to download our free demo version of Sudoku Star and give it a try.

Q: Where can I learn more about Sudoku and how to play?
A: A good place to start is Wikipedia.  Other good sites for Sudoku playing techniques and strategies include:
http://www.sudoku.com
http://www.dailysudoku.com/sudoku
http://www.saidwhat.co.uk/sudokus/sudokustrategy.php
http://www.scanraid.com/sudoku.htm
http://www.paulspages.co.uk/sudoku/howtosolve

Q: How do I download and install Sudoku Star?
A: You can download using your phone's WAP browser or by downloading to your personal computer and transfering to your phone.   See "Downloading" section above.

Q: How much does it cost to download Sudoku Star?
A:   We charge nothing for the Free Demo version of Sudoku Star.  If you download Sudoku Star to your personal computer and then transfer it to your phone using Bluetooth or a data cable, your cost will be zero.  If you download Sudoku Star to your phone over the air, your wireless carrier will typically bill you in increments of kilobytes (KB) for data usage (see your phone carrier's terms and conditions for how data sessions are billed under your plan).  The size of Sudoku Star is currently 79KB.  If you have a "data plan", it typically includes some number of free KB per month.  If you don't have a data plan or have exceeded your allotment of KB for the month, you will typically be charged an overrage rate like 1¢ per kilobyte.

Q: How many different games are built into Sudoku Star?

A: Sudoku Star contains an underlying  library of over 300 rated Sudoku games.  In addition, Sudoku Star has a game generator that will derive a virtually unlimited number (100's of millions) of games from these using a series of  mathematical transformations.  Once you unlock your copy of Sudoku Star, you willl almost certainly never play the same Sudoku game twice.

Q: Sometimes "Solve Game" takes a long time, is that a problem?

A: No.  For all but the hardest games, the Sudoku Star solver takes only a few seconds.  However, on the hardest games, solving a game can take a minute or two.  Be patient, the Sudoku Star solver will always get the solution eventually.

Q: Sometimes my entries in a game start out blue, then switch to green or red, what's going on?
A: When a game starts up, Sudoku Star begins solving the current puzzle in the background.  If you start making entries before the solution is complete, Sudoku Star displays your entries in blue.  When the solution completes, Sudoku Star automatically redraws your display and changes the blue digits to green or red depending up whether they are correct.

Q: How do I best configure Sudoku Star if I'm solving by "trial-and-error"?
A: First, go to Options and uncheck the "Show Errors" box, since otherwise you'll find out if a guess is correct immediately.  Leaving "Show Conflicts" checked will fill in squares with a light red background when it is a dead end (no possibilities remaining).  Turning the marks on also let you see when you've reached a dead end.  When you've reached a dead-end, hit "Undo" (the "*" key) multiple times to go back to your branch point.  Or, go to Commands and invoke "Last Correct" which will automatically undo back to the last time all your entries were correct and put your cursor on the square where you made the wrong choice.

Q: Can I make and receive phone calls, or close my phone, or power down my phone while in the middle of a game?
A: Yes, and in all cases the current game will be saved and will start up right where you left off the next time you run or resume Sudoku Star, including full undo history, statistics, etc.  To make a call, first suspend the game by invoking Exit or hitting the "hang up" button.  Incoming calls will automatically save the current game and suspend Sudoku Star so you can answer your call.  After the call, most phones will automatically take you back to Sudoku Star where you can resume the game right where you left off (on some phones you may need to quit and restart the game, but Sudoku Star still ensures that you will resume the game right where you left off).  Closing the phone or powering it down will also automatically save the current game and suspend Sudoku Star so that the game you are playing may be resumed later.

Q: How are the values in the Statistics screen calculated?
A: "Time" is the total elapsed time playing the current game.  Only time spent when the board is visible will count.  Time does not accumulate while you are in the menus or when you exit or suspend the game.  "Marks" is the elapsed time during which the marks are turned on.  Only time spent when the board is visible and the marks are on will count.  "Errors" is the number of times you've entered incorrect values in any squares.  "Hints" is the number of times you've pressed the hint ("fire") button.  While a game is in progress, the title bar of the Statistics screen shows the level of difficulty of the present game and how many games have previously been won at this level.  Between games, the Statistics screen shows how many games have been won at each of the four levels.

Q: My Nokia phone displays a "G" in the upper left corner, how can I make it go away?
A: By default Nokia phones display a "G" in the upper left hand corner to indicate whether GPRS service is available.  Unfortunately, this can obscure the upper left Sudoku box on smaller phones.  You can eliminate this problem by making the "G" display only when GPRS service is actually in use.  To do this, go to Menu > Settings > Connectivity >  Packet data > Packet data connection, then change from "Always online" to "When needed".

Q: How long to I have to unlock Sudoku Star from the time I purchase the activation key?
A: You have 24 hours from the time you purchase the activation key to unlock Sudoku Star.  The activation key is a "one-time" code, only good for unlocking Sudoku Star on your phone once.  After the 24 hour period, this activation key will no longer work.

Q: Once I activate Sudoku Star, does it expire?
A: Once you enter the activation key for the copy of Sudoku Star on your phone, it is unlocked indefinitely on that phone assuming you leave everything as it is.  However, if you delete Sudoku Star, or if you reinstall Sudoku Star and don't save the data from your current version, or if you reset your phone or otherwise erase your phone memory, your unlocking will be lost.  Since your original activation key is a one-time code, it will not work again to unlock Sudoku Star and you will need to purchase a new activation key.

Q: If I need to replace or wish to upgrade my phone, how can I transfer my copy of Sudoku Star?
A: Unfortunately, you can't. You will need to download Sudoku Star to your new phone and purchase a new activation key to unlock it on that phone.  Downloads and activation keys are nontransferable.
